Apparition
Standing by the patio doors,
an early sun was shining through
I thought I heard a gentle tap
no – I didn’t expect to see you
But I asked you in, made us some tea
and we sat in that warm rear room
Said you’d been away, started a book
Just didn’t think I’d see you so soon
When the sun went in I looked again
Somehow you weren’t quite the same
You hadn’t touched the cake or your tea
and now I couldn’t recall your name
So I took the pots through, confused
Nearly went outside for some air –
it was then I began to remember
but when I got back you weren’t there

Well done. I like your writing style, we seem to have that in common.

Mysterious and haunting (literally). You work “feels” impressionistic as does the painting in your header. Have you considered joining a poetry community to be able to share it. http://dversepoets.com is a very active one. (Maybe you already have). Hope to see more of you.

Thank you so much! I used to do astrology (not sure I believe in it now!) but you’re clearly a typical Gemini – lots of words and irons in many fires! Well done.

I really like this poem. It could be a phantom of another person or of yourself. It’s one I could come back to a few times.
Nice startle of realization:
“When the sun went in I looked again
Somehow you weren’t quite the same”

Such a brilliant poem, and one that’s right up my alley. I love poems like this; fleeting, yet powerful, and even a bit haunting.
Awesome. 🙂

Yes, I’m just grateful for your comments! And one thing is for sure, your English is better than my Dutch! Thanks again.

…and I see you’re from Terschelling – you must be a speaker of Frisian, the language most similar to English? 🙂

I can understand it, but this island has been part of Noord-Holland (where Amsterdam is) for a long time, till the Germans decided it should be part of Friesland (again). We have 3 local dialects here, on a pop. of 4600 , which are different again from Frisian:) In dialect we say “hors” for ” horse”, in Frisian it is “hinder”. But I speak Dutch. I say “paard” .
But it is true, if I hear people in a train speaking Frisian without being close enough to hear what they say, I often think it is English 🙂 More in sound than in language.

David this is a beautiful poem. It struck a chord with me as I spent most of the day working on case studies of people living with dementia. Many of the carers reflected on the challenges of loving and caring for someone they feel is sometimes lost to them. Thank you for sharing this.

Hi and thanks Jacqueline. Your work is clearly profound and important to you and others. We can never know what goes on in the mind of anyone but ourselves – that this is true is clear but so easy to forget. A few years ago I went to Buddhist classes, I’m not sure why, because I wouldn’t call myself a buddhist, but one thing it taught me, that everything is appearance to our own mind. So, in a very real sense, the whole of the universe exists for us – alone. Thank you again, I look forward to your posts.
Kind regards
