Poem ‘Bistro (when in Paris)’

Bistro (when in Paris)

what a surprise
to see our bistro still here,
so missable tucked away
between jewellers
and quirky galleries

‘au clair de la lune’
is so laid back,
subdued
in gratifying veils of gitanes,
softened
by potent aromas of pastis,
sensual
like biting through rarest
tender veal

if I may ask right now
(gently plying you with Chablis),
if Montmartre were a woman
who could she be
if not you?

  2. Hi Christine! LOL indeed! No, I can’t bear the thought of eating meat now either, specially something like veal. Thank you so much for your comments.

  3. Ahhh, David you have brought back memories of Paris for me. Love it. I was there in 1990 and just love the city. The poem you wrote is beautiful and captures the essence indeed. Check out my “Paris” Tag and you will see some of my impressions of the City of Lights.

  4. You have so eloquently captured the deliciously relaxed atmosphere of a bistro in Paris. Love the little ‘twist’ at the end. Always nice to add an intimate touch to a scene like this. Well, it’s so Paree!

  5. Love this section, particularly the texture of veal:

    “subdued
    in gratifying veils of gitanes,
    softened
    by potent aromas of pastis,
    sensual
    like biting through rarest
    tender veal”

I think this is still my favorite, though:

    “so missable tucked away
    between jewellers
    and quirky galleries”

  6. I’ve never been to Paris, but your poem makes me feel that I HAVE been to this spot, this Bistro. It awakens all the senses – vividly!
(And glad you’re a vegetarian. I don’t eat meat either – the thought of veal makes me cry….)

  8. If Montmartre were a woman….what a provocative thought. And definitely a woman. Complex, pristine if you don’t look too closely. Great poem, David. I’m enjoying Anonmous Lines…a poem a day. :0) Happy New Year.

  9. Love the colors and combination of dark and bright … especially like the center. Nice poem, but I haven’t been to Paris … someday though.

Thanks for stopping by my blog today.

  10. D.F., you have me sipping expresso, swinging my cross-legged slightly, humming to a sidewalk musician down the boulevarde. You DO weave a spell! Once again, the artwork is splendid.

Is it any wonder why you have a predominance of women commenting here?
