December 20 1803 — French Flag Lowered in New Orleans

On December 20 1803, the French flag was finally lowered in New Orleans, Louisiana, and replaced with the flag of the United States, marking a formal transfer of power between the two countries.

This was part of the process called the Louisiana Purchase, involving a vast tract of French owned land which extended from the Mississippi Delta northwards toward the border with the British territories of Canada. The purchase effectively doubled the size of the new republic overnight.

The purchase cost the United States $27M, money which Napoleon Bonaparte would find essential in his continuing struggle fighting the British and their allies back in Europe.
