Poem: Don’t Give Me Your Wine

Don’t give me your wine
and your promises
I have heard quite enough

The same room where you
fed me a future was
the one where you took it away

There was always a smell –
no it wasn’t the wine
merely the bovine linger

of fictitious heroes and
empty conversations until the
one with substance came along

Once I held you close
Now you’re keeping your secrets
Why did you grow up?

Poem: Rumour

Rumour

Tell me I’m wrong
but I’m hearing of wars
and rumours of wars,
some crystal clear pictures
of stark weapons pointing high,
spying drones brought low
and the smiling faces of men
I’m told are my enemy.

Each channel I see
repeats the same message
almost word for word,
so I switch it all off
and listen to the birds,
the sounds of my conscience –
common sense saying
that the end is not yet.

Fear rules the dark world
Fear, the enemy within
Who makes you afraid?

Clouds begin to clear
an azure invitation
Don’t wait to be asked
