Classical Music – My Current Favourites

Becoming a fan of BBC Radio 3 has increased my appreciation of classical music, and about time, too.
I have always had a soft spot for Vaughan Williams, and his 5th symphony is just wonderful… as is the 3rd… as is Tallis… as is Lark Ascending…
Anyway, that said, I never thought I would be a fan of Bach’s Cello Suites. Solo cello? Absolutely wonderful.
And neither had I heard Mussorgsky’s PIctures at an Exhibition as solo piano, the original in fact, before it was orchestrated by Ravel.
It all goes to show that there are always more world’s to be revealed. All you have to do is look.

Flanders 4 Italy 3!

Well, unlikely scoreline, perhaps, especially as Flanders isn’t ‘officially’ a country but in the Renaissance stakes, as in who were the greatest in terms of painting and artistic influence, well, maybe Flanders just edges it. Not that I could emulate either as my style owes far more to more recent trends in art, like impressionism. Take a look, won’t you?

The History of Art – Much Neglected

What a vast subject this is. Why have I left it so late to start learning it? The history of art is essentially the history of mankind and may point to our future. Maybe the next Michelangelo, Leonardo, Raphael… is alive now?

Giacometti meets Gandhara

Two paintings I’ve had on the go for some time, having made various changes. Well, here are the latest efforts (see Current Original Art). The first, Edel Blau, or Noble Blue, is in mixed media but essentially acrylic. I have created some interesting textures with the use of paper and fabric around the edges. Who is the subject? Well, that would be telling.
The second is of a Buddha’s head in acrylic, based on the Gandharan artistic tradition of Western India from about two thousand years ago. This was a melding of Indian and Greek art as a result of Alexander The Great’s eastern conquests and the spreading of Buddhist philosophy East. I am not sure where I got the idea of the orange cells. Are they honey cells, perhaps? I don’t know.

2 Paintings are better than 1?

I have put a new pair of paintings on ebay of Sutton on Sea, Lincolnshire at a buy it now price. Would make a great present and make a good talking point on a home or office wall. Sutton on Sea? Yes, it’s a fabulous place and it’s in Lincolnshire, perhaps the most underrated county in England.
