Mercury Retrograde — Astrology Musings

I might be mistaken, but over the past year there seems to have been a growing interest in a retrograde Mercury and what it means. I hear people with little astrological knowledge even referring to it. This may be simply due to us having had more time to investigate such astrological facts.

But of course, Mercury, like the other planets, do not actually move backwards at all, they merely seem to due to our perspective here on the good earth.

Technical Aspects

Then there is the technical side, like pre and post shadow phases which enclose the actual retrogradation, or backwards motion. Whilst the times are exact, there is not as much agreement as to the effects of retrograde planets as one would think. In fact there are some who don’t give it much credence at all.

However, if retrogradation is significant for any planet and ourselves, I would think that Mercury must top the list, purely because it is the ‘winged messenger’, Hermes in Greek, the mind, communication in all its forms and the media in general.

Misleading

The whole period in which Mercury goes through pre shadow, retrograde, and post shadow, can therefore represent a phase of time in which communication is not straightforward at all, and at times flagrantly misleading.

Right now, in early February 2021, we are in the middle of the retrograde phase of Hermes/Mercury, so we could be experiencing a higher than average occurrence of communicative problems and challenges, such as misunderstandings of all kinds, computer problems, travel issues, not only personally but as a society.

Trusting Intuition

We should therefore also be cautious about what we read — anywhere — and take nothing for granted. This is a time to trust our intuition more, to meditate, contemplate, basically go inward; we need to get our ‘news’ directly from source rather than through a medium, if at all possible.

Mercury turns direct around February 20 and moves out of post shadow around March 13. Bearing this in mind, we are likely to remain somewhat misled, perhaps confused, until around that first date, when things may become a little clearer, whether in regard to personal issues, or more mundane ones. Full clarity about what has transpired over the previous two months may not be obvious until the latter date, in the middle of March. Let’s see.

Hermes Exalted in the Watercarrier?

One interesting thought, Mercury is in Aquarius throughout this period, which to my mind is very well placed. I think there is a case that Mercury is actually exalted in Aquarius rather than its traditional exaltation in Virgo. The fact that there is much other Aquarian activity at the moment is also highly significant I feel, underlining the importance of Mercury’s presence in Aquarius right now.

Aquarius is an air sign and therefore, like Mercury, communicative — but in a profound, truthful and humanitarian way. This would put Mercury’s fall in Leo, an interesting thought which I won’t go into here.

A Turning Point?

So Mercury turning direct in Aquarius around February 20 and moving beyond through post shadow, could potentially represent a revelatory few days and weeks, with much profound insight. There could be a slow unravelling of a certain situation, and then from middle March, things may begin to ease somewhat towards the first day of spring on March 21.

Maybe the New Year will truly begin around that date.

Health & Astrology — Virgo

Photo by Polina Zimmerman on Pexels.com

Virgo is the 6th sign in astrology, ruled by the winged messenger Mercury, and is classified as mutable (changeable) earth. This sign is usually very interested in health and wellness issues.

Virgoans, or people with this sign emphasised in their chart, are often worriers, obsessed with the minutest details of their life and usually their own bodies. For this reason, their health can be a great cause for concern, whether there is actually anything genuinely concerning or not.

The part of the body associated with Virgo are the intestines, where food is processed and dealt with systematically — a very Virgoan trait. Traditionally Virgo is said to be susceptible to intestinal problems, perhaps as a result of too much worry and anxiety. Such conditions can lead to complications such as gout later on in life.

Yoga for better Virgoan health?

Most especially, despite Virgo’s great strength in dealing with life’s minutiae, he or she needs to take time off and relax, to take a look at the bigger picture. The strong Virgo is usually very interested in diet and being active, so practices like yoga can be very beneficial and will also help to the person to calm down.

Start Afresh? New Moon in Leo – Astrology Today

The New Moon on August 18/19 2020 is symbolically important and very interesting. What does this mean?

New Moons, and the immediate period after them, when the sun and Moon are in conjunction and the Moon begins a new cycle, are traditionally considered good times to begin something new, new projects, a change in lifestyle etc. What does this New Moon indicate?

Enjoy Yourself and Start Something New

A New Moon in Leo is positive in itself. Leo is the sign of ‘love, luck and life‘. It’s about enjoyment, kids, sport, having fun, making the most of your spare time. So begin something new along those lines. If we were living in different circumstances, a last minute holiday might have been a good idea to kick start something new!

This New Moon is conjunct Mercury too, planet of communication. Any new project involving the mind, books, your immediate family, neighbourhood, or something to do with local travel or business, could be well favoured if begun now.

Supercharged! And with ‘Royal‘ Approval?

What is more, this New Moon is also in very good aspect to Mars in its own sign of Aries. Although this aspect is separating, anything begun now will be supercharged! Maybe its time to give it a go, despite the circumstances we are all in.

What is effectively a triple conjunction of the Sun, Moon and Mercury, is also very close to the fixed star Regulus. This star, which is in the constellation of Leo, is one of the brightest in the sky, and it generally has a positive reputation, often to do with royalty. The sign of Leo is course also closely connected to royalty and celebrity. One might interpret this as giving an extra ‘royal’ assent to any new project begun around now.

*Interestingly, we may here some significant news regarding royal families over the next day or so.

Karmic Contacts

One more layer to add here is this Leo New Moon’s positive contact with the nodes, which have a special karmic significance. At the moment the nodes are in Gemini and Sagittarius, both signs of communication and the mind.

I think this once more tends to favour new beginnings in anything local rather than global. Thinking smaller and more local is probably the way to go.

Be Careful Out There

However, I must ring a note of caution here. Saturn, the greater malefic, so called, is in a difficult aspect to this New Moon. Whilst this aspect (the quincunx 150 degrees) may not be as obviously difficult or challenging as the square or opposition, it may signify that you should be prepared for some unexpected difficulties to arise – considering the times we are living in right now, this would not be surprising.

So yes, make the most of the New Moon in Leo. It’s special, but it’s also up to us to use this energy and propel ourselves into something new and enjoyable.
