through an open window; peals
of distant church bells

The Spinner

A web clings
with limpid fragility
to the fractured sapling,
timorous in air’s breath,
long left by the spinner
of autumn’s lair

Glimpses of life in colour —
Snatched by a snow cloud

a cat watching from inside.
Heating on all day.

The day snow returned,
buds showing on the blackthorn —
chilblains on my toes
