Poem ‘Raptor’

Raptor

Over church, a windmill,
warmer hued in a meagre sun,
through copses freshly naked
and into skies of madonna blue

My eyes are led easily,
catching the swift sole movements
like a gorgeous leaf circling
in elegant fall and flight

It all brings a rare smile
to winter’s thinnest lips,
this soaring, plaintive viola—
a primed glissando on his prey

  1. Hi David, what a scene 🙂 lovely! You always find a way to see and hear more, and reproduce it in a beautiful poem and painting, I admire that very much!

  3. So many vivid images in this – I love “skies of madonna blue”. You’ve described the flight and movements of raptors so clearly that I could SEE it. And of course the painting is beautiful!

  4. Oh my. The last stanza. I had to just keep rereading it like listening to a favorite tune over and over. I’ve never a fan of poetry, but you are teaching me much about this genre…the way it can be when it is good.

Oh, of course, I love the water color as well. Couldn’t I just keep soaring in that sky of blue?

  5. I really enjoyed this poem, ‘skies of madonna blue’ is lovely, & the close bringing sound to join sight, combining & the layering senses, adds a perceptive depth, but also nicely extends the elevation..reflecting flight ..hmm….lovely.,

  6. A gorgeous poem, David. Its images are as powerful as your art, and, for me, even more so. What you accomplish is what the best poets accomplish: You give us enough detail for our minds to paint in the entire picture, involving creative thought, thought, emotion, and sight. This is a very good trick and one well worth exploring when you read it.

  7. Such beautiful colors and serenity in your painting to complement your wonderful poem, David…

    Gracefully written, as always!

  9. Yes, of course! Good idea. Give it a bit of thought, sometimes two totally unrelated ideas ‘thrown’ together can create something really interesting. Perhaps, say, a poem of a few verses in which one writes one verse and the other responds with another? Or maybe a poem of a few lines by one, which is responded to, or inspires a second ‘counter’ part by the other, separated by an asterix, or something. You may have much better ideas than this! 🙂
